On Writing

Mary Aris has been writing stories and poems since the age of seven. She enrolled in a poetry class in High School where she was taught Poetic techniques such as Metaphor, Simile, and Personification. Since Elementary school and high school, Mary dreamed of becoming a writer. In 2001 she published two poems in honour of the victims of the September 11 Disaster. ‘Fire in the Sky’, ‘Phoenix Rising’ and ‘New York at Christmas’ were published by the Jersey Journal in 2001. Working as a Library Assistant in her local library, Mrs Aris was responsible for managing the Children’s Department under the supervision of the Head Librarian. She was responsible to organize and host Story Time and other after school activities for children. One of these activities was a Poetry writing contest she organized once a year to encourage children to write their own poems. The children wrote whatever they felt in their hearts and their poems were displayed by Mrs Aris on the Children’s Department bulletin board and each child was given a medal and a small prize.

In 2001 she was inspired by her love of romance, fairy-tales and fiction to write a story entitled Princess Rose. Princess Rose is a story about a pair of Monarchs living in Carlisle who were unhappy because they were both of age and still had no child of their own. Saddened by this fact, the queen poured out her heart in sorrow; but her prayers were heard and answered by seven blithe sisters calling themselves the Moonbeam Fairies. Happiness was restored in the Kingdom but not for long, for the Princess was kidnapped by the King’s Evil Magician....the diabolical Astroscuisnov (Pronounced ASTRO SHUS NOV). It wasn’t until 2008 that she published her book, Melodies of the Heart by Lulu.com. The following year she published Princess Rose, also by Lulu.com.

Her Children’s book, Bartholomew is inspired by a visit to her favourite city, Stratford-upon-Avon, England. In Stratford-Upon-Avon, she saw a single topiary in the shape of a Book Worm holding a book made out of flowers as she and her husband walked through the High Street of Stratford-Upon-Avon. It was then that she got the idea of writing Bartholomew, a cute story about a real talking Book Worm who encourages children to read and visit the library.
