A
Puzzle game
For the Amiga
This game was written on the Commodore Amiga computer. It was written with a programming language called (AM)iga (O)perating (S)ystem, over a period of four years, mostly part time work. During this time, many updates of AMOS were installed, every time this was done, a lot of de-bugging was required. After a while this became annoying, so the project was left for a while.

I was responsible for all the graphic design, while my friend David Griffin was involved with all the programming. I can remember completely re-designing the graphics, three times in fact ! Poor old David, also went through hell with his task, by completely coding everything from scratch, at this point, 1995 was the year when we finally released Coin Mania. The game wouldn't be released commercially, but as a shareware type of game. We sent copies of the FULL game to many Amiga magazines, hoping that they would review it, not casting it aside, just because we had put all our effort using AMOS. Out of all the Amiga magazines, only two reviewed our game, CU Amiga and The One Amiga. The more favourable review came from The One Amiga.
The One Amiga :
"It's AMOS and it's really quite good ! Many of you probably believe that AMOS is slow and rubbish. Well as these pages are slowly demonstrating, AMOS is in fact pretty dam good. It is a programming tool that can allow you to create some wonderful games. Coin Mania is an example. Essentially you are faced with several levels where you are control of a bouncy ball that you are moving around (only up and down mind you) to pick up coins. You have a time limit to pick up all the coins and get to the level exit. It's not all that easy. You have to pick your route carefully or you'll find that you can't pick up the final coins. You see there are a few problems to overcome, the floor has a habit of falling away after you have bounced on it meaning you path is limited. There are also holes in the floor anyway, and these can really start to cause a few problems. There is also green sticky stuff that will hold you down when you bounce on it. Sometimes however you have no choice, there are also arrows that turn slowly. They send you off in the direction that they are pointing. All this makes the games a great and challenging puzzler. This really is a great game. It simply goes to show what can be done with an Amiga and a bit of patience."
CU Amiga :
"It's leap
action ahoy in this game where you've got to jump around the
tiled area to collect coins within a set time limit. It's not all
that simple though, as some of the tiles have a nasty habit of
disappearing. You've got to be careful not to fall through the
gaps in the floor and plan your route carefully to avoid the
obstacles and nasties which delay and try to kill you.
An enjoyable little game to play, but the difficulty level is set
quite low so it doesn't really get the adrenaline going, mainly
because it seems so slow. The two biggest criticisms I have are
that there's hardly any sound to spice things up and the graphics
aren't as polished as they might be. Not top of the range but
good for a few hours of fun."
Do you think the CU Amiga reviewer was fair to say what he did ? Programming Coin Mania in AMOS was quite an achievement. David and I had seen quite a few games written in AMOS and couldn't believe some that had been written and were being praised by all the magazines. Never mind, the project was a fun one ! Sadly we didn't sell as many as we wished, but at least Coin Mania was our a contribution to the Amiga World !!!
